The torchbearer for the 2026 Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro in Thompson is Cory Beardy, a grade 11 high school student at R.D. Parker Collegiate. His commitment to sport excellence made him a spectacular choice for this honour. Cory is an athlete with Special Olympics who excels in cross-country skiing. He won a gold medal, along with his three other teammates, in the 4x1 km relay, free technique, at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.
When asked about how he felt when he found out he would be the torchbearer, Cory said he was “pretty excited, but nervous at the same time”.
He was initially very modest when asked if he expected or had any inkling of the honour. He then recalled the accomplishments that led him to the World Games.
“I did kind of know it could be me, because I was chosen to be in Italy”.
Despite being nervous, Cory handled it well. He fell down a few times while competing, but he got back up and still had an amazing time. This is a testament to Cory’s attitude about sport, and life in general: even when you fall, it’s okay – just get back up and keep going.
While Cory is not participating in these Games, he is volunteering his time for the archery competition. He says that archery is one of his other interests, in addition to playing games with his friends and hanging out.
His advice for the athletes is simple.
“Try your best. Don’t think too much of it. And have fun!”
Pro tip from someone who knows what it is like to compete on a high-pressure stage.
Cory did a fabulous job bringing the torch into the arena and lighting the Games' cauldron. He is an excellent ambassador for sport for life, Thompson, and the Northern community.
