Preparing for the Games

Get the information you need to prepare for the Manitoba Games.

Roles at Games

Coaches and Managers

Coaches are responsible for the overall supervision of their athletes at the Games, which begins with the bus ride up to Thompson, includes staying at the Athletes Village, and ends when the athletes are dropped off following the bus ride home.Managers are responsible for the overall coordination of their team.

They are expected to communicate with their assigned Chef de Mission leading up to and during the Games. Managers are also required to travel with their athletes during all transportation, stay in the Village, and support the coaching staff in chaperoning their team.

Responsible Coaching Movement

Sport Manitoba signed the pledge for the Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM). The RCM is a multi-phase, system-wide movement coordinated by the Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport that affects all sport organizations and coaches.

Coaches have many responsibilities, and one of them is to ensure they provide a safe environment for their athletes and themselves. When athletes and their parents entrust a coach as a leader, they assume the coach has taken steps to become a responsible coach, including implementing the three steps to Responsible Coaching:

Rule of 2

No coach should ever be alone one-on-one with an athlete. If a coach must be one-on-one with an athlete, they must do so in a public place within earshot or within view of another coach or adult.

Background Screening

Screening in a Games program includes a criminal record check with vulnerable sector search and a child abuse registry check.

Ethics Training

Coaches must complete Respect in Sport (RiS) training. RiS is an online training course for coaches and sport leaders designed to assist in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment, and bullying in sport.

Chef de Mission and Assistant Chef de Mission

The Chef de Mission leads their regional contingent of athletes, coaches, and managers, and aids operations during the lead-up to and at the Games. These talented and hard-working folks are the primary link between Sport Manitoba, the 2026 Thompson Host Society, and the participants representing their region. The Assistant Chef de Mission assists the Chef de Mission with the management of the Manitoba Games program in their region. They support the Chef de Mission with the implementation of all tasks to ensure the coaches, team managers, and athletes have success navigating the Games environment at the Manitoba Games.

Accreditation

Every Games participant will receive an accreditation badge upon arrival at the Games. This badge provides athletes, coaches and managers with access to their accommodation site, the food venue, competition venues, transportation arrangements, as well as ceremonies and special events. It is important that every participant has their Games accreditation with them at all times in order to be able to identify themselves.

Lost Accreditation?

If an accreditation badge is lost during the Games, please talk to your coach, manager, or Chef de Mission, who will accompany the athlete to the Accreditation Centre to get a new badge.

TIP! Your Games accreditation is your passport into all events, competitions, and venues during the Games! Keep it on you at all times.

Accommodations

All athletes, coaches and managers will be housed in what is referred to as the Athletes Village, with separate accommodations for males and females. Athletes are required to sleep in their respective Village and will stay with other participants from their sport or region at a public school in Thompson. Please note that no inflatable mattresses are permitted in the Villages. Cots will be disinfected by Host Society volunteers before athlete arrival in both phases.

At The Games

What to expect during the Canada Games.

Athletes Village

Participant Accommodations

All athletes and coaches/managers will stay in their home away from home - the Athletes’ Village, located at Memorial University. Games accommodations are security-controlled 24 hours a day. Only those with designated accreditation are allowed in the Athletes’ Village.

Quiet time begins at 11:00 p.m. and there is a 12:00 a.m. curfew. All athletes, coaches, managers, and technical staff must be in their designated room with lights out at that time. Any Team Manitoba participants violating this curfew (unless due to sport schedule or transport from sport venue) will be subject to disciplinary action.

Athletes will be assigned to a room, by team and their coaches/managers will be assigned to rooms nearby. Every room will have beds and washroom facilities nearby. The host society will provide athletes with a fitted sheet, bed sheet, blanket, pillow, pillow case, and bath towel. Linens can be exchanged during the week at the residence desk.

There are card operated laundry services available throughout the different residence buildings. Participants are responsible for paying for their own laundry and detergent (detergent available for purchase at Information Desk). The cost per load for the washer is $2.00 (subject to change) and the dryer is an additional $2.00 (subject to change).

Athlete Entertainment

Athlete entertainment is primarily drop-in style with the majority of activities unscheduled in order to work around athletes’ schedules.

Macpherson College Quad (Outdoors)
Macpherson College Quad will be the go-to spot for outdoor activities. This area will feature lawn games such as corn hole, spikeball, crossnet, and giant jenga. There will be lounge zones available with picnic tables, adirondack chairs, and lighting. Music and activities will be set up to enhance the athlete experience.

Nighttime movies and other activities will also be scheduled in this space each week.

Arts and Culture Centre (Indoors)
The Arts and Culture Centre will be the primary indoor space for athlete entertainment. A wide range of activities will be offered here including video games and live sport streaming. There will be a designated area for athletes to engage with board games, table games, bracelet making, and puzzles. Yoga will be offered daily in this space and will be supplemented by other mental health focussed activities.

In addition to the specific outdoor and indoor spaces, there will be activities and relaxation spaces in other areas of the Village including:

  • Quiet rooms
  • Computer commons
  • Nondenominational place of worship
  • Pin trading

Food Services

Participants will have access to a variety of prepared, healthy meals in the Athletes Village. The menu has been developed in consultation with a sport dietitian and should have options for every dietary need.

Food services are located at the R. Gushue Hall (main dining hall) and the second floor of Hatcher House. Both locations will feature buffet stations offering various entrees and sides per day, grazing items (snacks), cold-serving foods, and soup/salad.

Hours of operation are:

  • Breakfast - 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • Reduced service - 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • Lunch - 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Reduced service - 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Dinner - 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Early breakfast and late dinner options are accommodated if necessary due to sport schedules and/or delays. Certain venues will provide feeding on-site, or provide the option to order box lunches due to sport schedules keeping participants away from the dining hall during meal times.

Include allergies/special dietary needs in the online registration.

Talk to Mission Staff if there are dietary concerns.

Transportation

School buses will be used to transport participants to and from competition/training venues as well as for athlete spectator shuttles. There is a dedicated loading zone at the Athletes Village for transportation to venues.

The participant bus system operates in two ways:

  • Team sports (e.g. soccer) will have their own dedicated bus.
  • Individual sports (e.g. golf) will share among all provinces/territories.

A spectator shuttle will be provided for those participants who wish to watch other competitions as their schedule allows. There is a predetermined shuttle schedule; however, on-demand shuttles and/or accessible shuttles will be available upon requests a minimum of 12 hours in advance.

Medical Services

If a participant is sick or injured at Games, Team Manitoba’s medical Mission Staff will assist them and take them, and the team’s Mission Staff or coach/manager, to the Polyclinic. The Polyclinic is a facility, staffed by healthcare professionals, that is set up to diagnose and treat a variety of injuries and conditions on site at Games. It is staffed daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. with a physician on-call overnight.

Patients will be triaged and then directed to the following services if required:

  • Physician primary care assessment and treatment
  • Athletic therapy
  • Chiropractic
  • Physiotherapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Prophylactic taping and bracing
  • Mental health care
  • Dentistry
  • Optometry
  • Mobility aids

Bring all medications and a copy of prescriptions.

If medications require refrigeration, ensure the coach/manager is aware.

Only those with designated Games accreditation are allowed in the Polyclinic. Questions from parents/guardians can be directed to mission staff or coaches and managers.

Due to a variety of factors such as lack of hygiene or lack of scientific evidence, ice baths will not be available to participants at the Games. For those who use elastic therapeutic tape (aka kinesio tape, k-tape,), they will need to bring their own to Games. All taping must be done at the competition site and can be done by either the venue medical services team (if available) or coaching staff.

Equipment Storage

Depending on the sport, equipment may be stored at the competition venue or the Athletes Village. For venue storage, participants will need to verify their equipment on arrival before it is transported out. For Village storage, each province/territory will be assigned a sea can that is accessible using a lockbox code provided to mission staff.

  • Canoe/Kayak (paddles)
  • Cycling

High Performance

CADP In-Competition Testing

Team Manitoba and the Canada Games Council are compliant with the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP). Athletes selected to be tested at Games will be required to provide a sample to a Doping Enforcement Officer. They will have the opportunity to have a coach, manager, or mission staff member accompany them throughout the process.

Doping enforcement operates under the principle of “strict liability” meaning participants are 100% responsible for any substances they consume and/or are found in their testing samples. Team Manitoba strongly recommends that prior to Games, athletes determine if medications they are taking are allowed within the constraints of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. A useful tool to determine whether or not a medication is allowed is the Global Drug Reference Online database.

Peak Performance

Sport Manitoba Performance created six guides to peak performance for Team Manitoba athletes. Each guide has tips, strategies, and recommendations to help them reach their potential at a multi-sport games event. It is critical to prepare for all the distractions, new environments, and busy schedules to be faced leading into and at Games.

Sport Science

At the Canada Games, Team Manitoba mission staff will include strength and conditioning coaches (S&Cs) and mental performance consultants (MPCs) each week. S&Cs can assist with activation/preparation and/or rest and recovery techniques such as foam rolling, mobility exercises, and drills for warm-ups and cooldowns. MPCs can help participants get into the proper mindset ahead of critical moments so they can focus on their performance and be at their best.

Sessions are available through a booking process in advance, or ad hoc as needed throughout the week.
